Local, state, regional and national communities have taken on activities large and small to honor older adults, draw attention to abuse issues, and promote the spread of information to help prevent abuse.

  • Take the Ageless Alliance Stand Against Elder Abuse Ageless Alliance is a national, non-profit grassroots organization working to promote aging with dignity and eliminate elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation through awareness, advocacy, and action.
  • Elder Justice NOW by the WITNESS Project, the Elder Justice Coalition and the National Council on Aging. Elder rights advocates collected video stories to create an educational video “An Age for Justice, Confronting Elder Abuse in America” and the 100 Stories video advocacy campaign.
  • National Crime Prevention Council has created Crime Prevention Month Kits to help communities get the word out for and during October.
  • Office for Victims of Crime, Department of Justice leads communities throughout the country in their annual observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) in April by promoting victims’ rights and honoring crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf.

Examples from Federally-funded Family Violence Prevention Campaigns

  • National Resource Center of Domestic Violence, Administration for Children & Families, Family Violence Prevention and Services Program. The National Resource Center of Domestic Violence (NRCDV)’s Domestic Violence Awareness Project (DVAP) supports and promotes the national, tribal, territorial, state and local advocacy networks in their ongoing education efforts through public awareness campaigns, strategies, materials, resources, capacity-building and technical assistance.
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention > Veto Violence website is an evolving resource. It features training, all of which is free and a portion of which offers accreditation. There are also resources for developing, implementing, and evaluating effective prevention programs, including a section on writing and implementing success stories.
  • Child Welfare Information Gateway. Preventing Child Abuse & Neglect Public Awareness section provides resources and information on sharing a message and educating the public, making an economic case for prevention, and creating community support and partnerships to prevent child abuse and neglect.
